I've decided to go dark side.........
I don't intend to mess around with crap reels. Please recommend a quality reel. Open to all advice.
Thanks in advance,
Steven |

| The aventa vt 1002 is no crap reel as many people think it is. This real is amazing and with the price of 140 u can spend some decent money on a good rod. The reel starts up great even in super slow water i have not one complaint about this reel. Im sure there are others that can back me up. |

I was thinking about giving Adam a call.
Edited to ask, what size spool should I be considering? |

PFC is a great pin as i have heard, having never fished em.. Anything 4.5" and up. Dont think of any pin as crap, becuase quite honestly they all do the same thing. As i have said before only tolerences and preferences differ a pin. Kingpin, PFC, Milners, all good names out there. Personally though i would go with a PFC, because hes local and its made in the USA. (actually made about 5 minutes from my house) |

Thanks 95T,
Well that just about wraps it up, PFC 4.5" and larger. I had done some research prior this week, and had already come to this conclusion.
Now.....rods? Is it GLX as I suspect or is there something else that has slipped under the radar?
Best regards,
Steven |

You'll be glad you called him .
I prefer a 5" or larger reel. But that's me.
As far as rods go.... I'm waiting for the new croix's to hit the stores before I buy another float rod. |

SCB 57,
I will walk you through the pros and cons of size and spool width as it has been communicated to me by the many people I had discussed this with. If you pick up the reel in person, I would be more than happy to show you a few quick tips and maybe take a stroll down to the river for some streamside demonstration.
Look familiar Smokepole? This is the reel you played with before you purchased yours. A lot different isn't it? |

I've owned three Paine Falls reels so far, and I've been happy with all of them.
The latest model added to my armory is a 5" Torrent, and it's reaaaal nice! It's by far the nicest of my personal collection.
Adams' attention to detail is second to none, as is the customer service you get! Great reels, great guy, and made in the US - what more can ya ask for?
5" Torrent on a custom 9' 4pc 8wt float rod
My next model will most likey be a 4.5" one-of-a-kind to mount on my 11' CTS. I'll be putting the 5" Torrent on my 13' 6" CTS. |

| It's mostly a matter of personal preference. There a quite a few nice reels from $300.00-$900.00. Go to Erie Outfitters and check them out and pick the one YOU like best. Craig has one of the best selections around, so you'll do yourself a favor by paying him a visit rather than soliciting our PERSONAL preferences. |

I also reccomend visiting Adam of Paine Falls and check Erie Outfitters and compare ALL the reels and make your own choice. I went through this myself and it can get confusing if you read and think too much. Go touch, feel and spin the reels at Adam's and Erie Outfitters. It is a personal preference and they are all good reels. They all hold line and the rod is a bigger deal. I bought a PFC for personal preferences. I love the reel and Adam is first class. Get what you like and want not because someone pushed it. Rods and reels have the same questions- Custom or production? Good luck with your quest.
