Hi,
I want to start throwing hardware for steel in the Rocky River specifically. What pound test should I use? How about rod action, speed, length, etc.? Any techniques for avoiding snags and losing expensive spoons and spinners?

i primarily fish small spinners. mepps #0 - #2 & the small rooster tails. i prefer mepps - they're built better. rooster tails are godd for a fish or 3 at best. last year i was using 6# test this year i'm with 8#. i used a 7' med ugly stick for 20 years & did fine. i now have a 9' light action that i like even more. the key imo is to have a fast action tip section. avoiding snags is a tough one. you will lose some hardware. if you ain't snaggin' once in a while you're not in the right place. feel is important - feel the lure bump & raise the tip before it snags up. if it does snag up, give it some slack & quickly snap the tip up several times. if that doesn't get it out, either wade around it or break it off. |

| Your going to loose them so try making your own. Don't set the hook on logs, the strike is usually hard and you shoudl know the difference, if huing wade up or down river and try to get a better different angle on it. The cost of making your own can be cheap if you don't buy the fancy wire twisting devices. I made mine for about 0.75 cents ea. |

I'd love to know where to find french style spinner blades locally. I live in Indianapolis and all they sell are colorado or Indiana blades. I like the longer (but not willow leaf) blade styles you find on Black Fury or Rooster tails but it seems most blades they sell in stores are for slow trolling not lure making.
Ditto on make your own. Two pair of pliers and a wire cutter are all you need, doesn't take long and isn't difficult. |
