Lead Eyes

Do you tend to put lead eyes on your flies? Reason I ask is your line is already weighted, and you want your fly to be the first thing the fish sees. So, if there are heavy eyes on the fly, won't that make it ride more under the line rather than out in front where it should be? Or, am I thinking about this the wrong way?

Lead eyes add character as well as weight to a fly, just like a bead or lead wrap built into your fly it will get down into the zone faster. You just have to make adjustments whether it's split shot, grain of line or in the weight of your fly.All depends on the water.

I look at float fishing with flies the same way that you describe Rippinlips. Therefore, I do not usually add weight to flies that I intend to fish under a float. I will still occasionally use small beadheads on my nymphs, but mostly just create a head from thread wraps. I also like to keep my jigs light, so I tie up bead-and-pin jigs that still have large strong jig hooks but minimal weight.
