Selecting float size Blackbird PhantomHow to rig your gear for Steelheading fishing, Questions and answers...about methods, equipment, and steelhead fly fishing gear.

I need advice as how to select the size of float for jig and bait float fishing. I see everything from size #8 to #2.5 but I cannot find any infor what the sizing means and how to know how much weight to use to fish the float properly. Has anyone used the Blackbird Phantom floats? youtube videos of Canadiens often show a preference for this type of teardrop like float. Any advice is appreciated.
Re: Selecting float size Blackbird Phantom
The weight that the float will carry is stamped on the float 8g implies the float will take 8 grams of weight to sink it to it's neutral position. A 2.5g float is smaller and will only carry 2.5 grams of weight. Generally larger floats (8g) would be be used in faster flows where as a 2.5g would be used in slower pools. (1 ounce= 28.35g)

BlackBirds work well, but are not very durable. Bounce one off a bridge or a log, and they break a lot. I mainly use them on small streams.
