thats me with the rod john. the rod is a gander 9' light action steelhead rod. i have that same reel, ands it is el cheapo, but it has drop away handles and a drag. i wouldn't suggest a strubla. let me see about a different one. i would lend you one of mine, but you won't mail it back after using it.
No Lead, Did you use that rod for pin? I can get that rod for pin also. However, I have a nice switch rod from St. Croix, 11' 7 weight. I would like to try that rod with the pin first, for I would like to carry one rod to the water for pin and fly fishing. Yes, if you loan me a pin I will keep it and won't send it back if it is a great one.
i would use the croix. i did use the gander for pinning but i also had a 12'6" echo switch, a 13'6" orvis spey, a bamboo 7wt and 1 or 2 other rods on that trip. used the pin on them all.
now i just throw a pin on any rod and go for it.
The line should pop before the rod, unless it's over-lined.
here are my cheap ebay pins.
these are the stamped steel cheapo reels. stubla, lureflash, shadowland.
these are older english pins. the ones that started it. on left is an allcocks record breaker. great pin. on right is a grice and young, avon royal supreme III. great pin.
MG]http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g253/nolead/IMG_1105.jpg[/IMG] the steel ones were less than $20. the brits were around 100 pounds each.
bought 2 of them...for the money ya cant beat them, they spin like a top and go on and on, they will start to turn as soon as the line is dangling off the reel..by far the best bang for the buck...nuff said
