I've seen many guys tipping their jigs/flies with waxworms and do awesome on them. My question is, is it the visual appearance of the waxies or does it give off a scent that steelheads like? I know they're a pretty picky scent biter at times, but would waxworm flies work? The only times I really use live bait is when I'm fishing the lake or harbors. I don't really like using spawn or live bait when I'm river fishing, but strictly flies on my fly rod.
So would a waxworm fly work for these winter steelheads? Or would only the real thing work?
Also, can anyone recommend a nymph pattern for these winter steels? I'm sure they're tired of seeing my usual glo bugs drifting pass them. Your help is appreciated! Thanks!

Waxworms?Discussions About Fly Tying Methods, Techniques and Tips

I don`t know- alot of guys I talk to say it`s about the scent w/waxies. I don`t use them personally, but I know quite a few guys that do. As far as using other flies, depends on where your fishing, but hare`s ears, caddis larva, stoneflies, mayfly imitations (p.t.`s, copper johns),leech patterns, & micro-jigs can all be productive.
That's what I kind of figure too, the scent of the waxies. It seems like waxies are a good bait for winter fishing since they get used a lot for ice fishing also. I'll make some waxworm flies and try it out. Thanks.
