Okay Metalheads please give me your favorite fly reel for Steelhead? I mostly use a 8 wt rod. The length's are 9 to 10 ft.
Please give me Company, model, gear construction, drag and warranty? Or anything else you like or dislike, etc? I would like to invest in a new reel with a price range of $200-$400.
I want something that will last and take a beating. Most importantly a drag that will hold up.
Many thanks to all in advance for your replies. I appreciate everyone on the site.
Good Luck To All. The time is near!

I use the Hardy Angel 1 - 7/8 not the Angel 2 - 7/8 , just right for my custom 10" 7wt sage Z-Axis rod.... this reel fits perfect for the rod......
- Love the size.. just perfect
- I wish they the diameter of the reel was a little bit wider..
- Drag is great... the design is AWESOME! one of the best looking reel in my opinion.
I do have 2 Sage 3400D and find it too heavy for the my 8wt 9' G-loomis NativeRun GLX fly rod and my 8wt 9'6" Z-Axis.....
- A little too heavy
- Love the drag numbers... one of the most brightest idea to put on a reel if you ask me....
- Drag is great... design is great looking...
Flylogic FLO 7/8/9
awesome reel... I started out on this reel...
Sturdy, nice design... drag was good and no problem...
A little too slim for my taste but I believe they have a large arbor one as well...
Abel Super 8
Nice reel.... a bit too heavy like the Sage 3400D....
drag - works great but don't let you reel get wet, sometimes your drag will start to fail... I can't really explain why probably due to the drag system itself..... but I really dislike that ALOT!
a bit too bulky....
So depending on which rod you get... you might want to check out which reel best suite you....
Good luck on finding the right reel for your rod!

8wt may be a bit much for steelies but I guess it's just personal preference.
I have an Evolution 3.5, matched with a 9'6" 7wt XP. A wonderful combo. Drag is great, reel is light and it looks sharp as well. Ross are made in the USA and their warranties are great from what everyone says, even though I've never had to take them up on it, knock on wood.

Flawless Flies thank you for your post. I will check on those models.
Cruncher what model is your Ross reel?
I like the fact that Ross reels are made in the USA. Keep the suggestions coming.

In response to 8wt being to heavy I must clarify I reside in Michigan and we can hook up with a salmon as well.
Rain baby Rain!
Thanks,

I currently use an able Super 8 and Tibor Everglades, both are great. The drag system is what you need to look at. A also bonefish alot, both reels will do you well. Look on ebay for good used ones in your price range.

....been using an Orvis MidArborIV. Light, good drag, good customer service and for $200 you can get a reel and an extra spool.
