Switch or light spey? Help choosing a new rod

Only tried the 12'5" 7wt. on the Deschutes and fished the 8'9" 4wt. on Spring Creek (it casted well with the Wulff Triangle Taper). Nice fishing rods, beautiful workmanship. Actually, very fine workmanship.

Like I said, Orvis doesn't give me anything. They dont give handouts like some of the other companies. I have to work for everything I have. The flies dont tie themselves.

Try a Beulah. I just picked up the 10ft6in 8/9wt and it rocks. Perfect for swinging smaller waters. I have never fished or seen the Salmon, so your tastes may vary. Price is right, the fit and finish are tip-top.

Chrome-dome - what line are you using with that rod? Would the 5/6/7 spey be well matched for larger fish (steelhead to 15+, kings and cohos) or is it better for the medium size steelhead found say in Erie. Did you consider a Meiser switch rod also? The System 8 or 10 seem quite comparable.

I have and fish the 11'7" 5/6/7 Meiser regularly. It's fine for steelies but you should consider a different stick for kings, especially for the crowds you're talking about. On mine I use Guideline Scando heads or a homemade Skagit that runs 480 grains including tips.

That 7125 is a very nice rod. Really great with a 6/7 Delta which is the only line I have ever cast with it...

You know how I feel about Orvis boots/waders, but I didn't say a word about their rods being junk. I use their rust proof boxes religiously. I would be willing to cast a Helios actually I would like to. I was very disappointed in the Winston sticks utilizing boron. The top half where the graphite is was way to soft and then the bottom half where the boron is was so stiff that there wasn't a smooth transition from top to bottom. At least that was my opinion on the 9' 5 weight, 10' & 11' 7 weights I used to own. I did like the 8130 two hander though...

Hey have you ever noticed that boron rods vibrate when they are around any major power lines or a dam that produces electricity? If you are ever holding a Winston boron rod around Berrien Springs dam or any other hydroelectric dam there is this tingling vibration that you don't feel with graphite rods. When I owned that 11' 7 weight it did it every time. My buddies always told me I was crazy until I handed them the rod. The dam at Mishawaka was the worst as they have those massive overhead lines everywhere for a long distance downstream to the bridge. It would actually get really annoying how much you felt the tingling in your hands. Made me think twice about using those rods when there was any chance of lightning what so ever. At least I am assuming it was the boron because it didn't do it with any graphite rods...

I'm not sure what line was on the 12' 5" but it sure fished nice. Even caught a few skippers on it.

Come to think of it, I did notice that tingling sensation when fishing under the power lines. I blamed it on the beers I consumed the night before.

Winston considers their BIIX fast action, I believe, but in the scheme of things they are pretty soft. As you said, fairly stiff butt and the usual soft tip. Some prefer this action. It all depends on the caster.

Hit some STEEL. I'll be up in a few weeks. Just hoping for one hook-up on the chrome.

Red' curious what grain weight/s Guidelines your fishing on the little Meiser. 8/9 cut back?

8/9 cut back 26-30'. I use the full sinkers.

be sure to check ou the decho line of 2handers i have a 11 '9" 4 wt. and a 6wt 12'6" special rods for the money have owned sage 11' switch and sage 2 handers best rods out meiser makes a beautiful rod you can own 2 decho for the same money as one of the others. my2 cents!!!!!!

I just got back from 8 months in north Central WA fishing on a "medium" sized river. I solely used the beulah 6/7 switch for swinging applications. the elixer line is GREAT for all skagit type casts. When it comes to nymphing, I did however go to the single hander because since the elixer line doesn't allow for mending when the drift is too far out past the head section. The running line is too thin to pitch the head upriver. If your fishing water with a continuous flow, you shouldn't have too much a problem. I will say this... this setup will throw an Indi rig as far as you need it with a simple double hand, overhead cast. One back cast and watch 80' go sailing!. I have also cast the Deer Creek 5/6 and that stick is an absolute dream! Good luck.

A note that the Decho 2 handers must get a look at! I picked up a 11' 9" 4wt and absolutly love how it roll casts. I would rather have an rod that has a little bit more reach otherwise a single hander is close that I can use. Just my opinion so good luck choosing on to many nice rods!
