First off, hello everyone. Long time no post...
Now I am not a biologist, landscaper (for those that actually remember that post.. ahhh the good old days...)
Dougbass and blackie are both right. With the limited ground water fet tribs repo is low. The items that blackie is referring to of canopy and under cut banks add to the little ground water feeding of streams
Dougbass your numbers are a little off. You assumed that there was only one year of stockers spawning in your calculation. extend that out 4 -5 years. add in PA stray fish yada yada... Now place those natural spawned fish into a handful of small tribs and it may seem like more.
I think the key is there are many factors that effect the success rate of fish spawning in Ohio. Number one would have to be summer conditions this years success rate will be higher than last year. Why... lower temps and more rain.
Now in IMHO good fins are not a good tell tale sign of a adult wild fish. Remember these fish are only grown in a hatchery for one year or so until about what 5-6 inches... I've seen many fingerling stocked fish that look 100% wild. Not all fish will show fin damage. I'd be willing to bet that Ohio raised fish have a better change of having good fins than a fish has a chance to repo in the wild.
