Latest build SJ843

[SSG Steelhead]

This is a SJ843-MHX for a buddies Dad and fellow Vet. He was also awarded the DFC so I did a replication in the split grip area. The handle is American Walnut, reel seat is Northern Maple Burl both with 5-6 coats of spar and hand rubbed to a satin finsih. The guides are all titainum. Done just in time for Christmas!

I am getting ready to start 5 ice rods here in the next few days. I need to get out in the shop at night because I am hoping to do some fishing over the holiday!

I was talking to a guy the other day about ice fishing rods. He had a great idea. He'd buy broken fly and spinning rods and turn them into ice rods buy just using the tip section of the broken rods, said he'd buy lots of 20-30 rods and get 15-18 rods out of them for pocket change. Pretty cool idea if you ask me.

I have a few that I have made like that but I do not go out and buy them like that. A good ice blank does not cost much more than a broken rod and it can be solid carbon instead of hollow allowing greater sensitivity and durability. I do have an IM8 on there right now that broke last year and will make a nice pike jig rod.
