Steel on a 5 wt is stupid, if you are going to release the fish. If you are going to keep it I dont care if you use a 2wt. Still wont be impressed though. As for this no egg thing. I dont care. Doesnt make a difference to me. I say get rid of them completely. I am waiting for the talk of us all banning together to change this. Just like you did on the high water mark issue. You know the saying "you cant fight city hall" I think you should all just shut up and obey the rules. If you are one of those fools who thinks that they have to fish eggs, well go fish down low. If you are one of the guys who can catch them on anything you want, well this doesnt effect you. Bottom line is if you dont like it quit fishing or obey the rules.
I'm with redb on this one....not only the 'steel on a 5wt' but also on obeying the law. And remember, there will always be people watching with a cell phone within their vest.

That hasn't stopped the fly snaggers every spring, or the egg zippers??? Why would this law be any different. Sure, most will abide by the law, but some wont, and just like any other game violation, a lot more will get away with breaking the law than those that actually get caught.

Fingerling wrote:Distribution is the key word here. It means to catch and sell (which is illegal unless you have a commercial license) not catch and take home to eat. Besides 90% of fish sold in ohio is from out of country such as canadian salmon. Other countriies also such as kenya, uraguay, new zealand, switzerland, ect. Just because it says lake or yellow perch does not mean it came from the great lakes.
Are you saying that if I do not sell (distribute) the eggs all is well??
What about the LARGE (Over 30 million pounds with a $23 million dollar dockside value in 2000) commercial fishery for Lake Erie? Are those fish distributed?
What I am getting at is that it is a POORLY written order even by government standards and will be heavily modified before it is all said and done.

Sweet. When will people lern you dont need eggs to catch fish anyway. Some yarn works just fine. Really make it a challenge.

it has been illegal to snag any fish other than rough fish here in indiana since the 80's. And still to this day there are snaggers every season steel or salmon. and i have never seen anyone get arrested but i have caught plenty of snagging hooks. Like alot of things u can try and stop it but u won't. heck u can even buy pre-made snagging hooks from bass pro.

SPAWN NATION is in an uproar and ironically this article/proclamation was written at the end of another steelhead season .
It's sad that this thread is heading down the old bait vs spawn, bad vs good, simple vs self righteous, etc. Truth is there are just way too many unanswered questions that need input on this topic and how this plan is thought to keep VHS in check, but it's funny how these types of topics always show how united all us steelheaders really are .
Maybe all fishing should be ban until we realize that VHS is all over the US despite humans best efforts to stop it . I'd love to see someone chime in with a biological perspective, but apparently maybe there just is not enough (or too much) biological evidence to support exactly how VHS can and will spread and perhaps how little (or big) effect we who utilize the fishery may have .
Tight Lines,

The trout are allow to carry their eggs upriver past the I-90 bridge and deposit them, but not the fishermen.

What if a giant raptor grabs a steelhead and proceeds to fly south of I-90 and only eats have the fish and leaves the rest south of the border.
This proposal as it stands is unbelievable as its written currently. If they are claiming that using eggs from a steelhead south of 90 is going to cause more problems with VHS, then who is going to tell the fish they can't deposits thier eggs south of 90.

Simply put the fish are entrusted more than humans not to spread the disease that the LIVING fish actually carry . Gee, I wonder if my rods, vest, and waders have traces of VHS, I'd guess there's a diSTINKt possibility .

Kinda like closing the barn door after the horses got out. Even if every fisherman and fisherwoman follows the rules it won't stop anything on the Lake Erie tribs, the fish will spread it themselves. I can understand doing everything possible to keep it out of other watersheds but for the Erie tribs, its too late to stop it. I'm all for stopping the spread of VHS but I feel they should concentrate their efforts on the watersheds that are not already affected by it.

The matter of VHS is really more of a Fisheries issue than a reports issue, although I fully understand that restrictions on the use of eggs will probably affect reports in some way. I am moving this post to the Fisheries forum, where it rightfully belongs.

It needs to stay on the report site where there is more uses than the Ohio page. This subject needs to be known.
