I picked up a Gloomis STR1562S 13' rod in Sept. and I'll tell ya, it sure makes a difference if you want to release that fish to be caught another day. Same goes for my 13' Frontier X. I can't imagine how many steelhead I've killed over the years because I was fishing with crap.
Getting back to that video, I'm 51 yrs old and have been fishing since I was 4 and have yet to do anything as silly as that kid. I think 1% of the time it's defective product and 99% of the time it's a mental defective that doe's the damage.
Cheers

I own about 15 st.croix rods and have only ever broken them from my own stupidity (smacking tips while casting around brush, casting a 5oz bulldawg on a rod geared for 1 1/2oz, stepped on them, casting with the ferrals not all the way together) other than that they have been pretty stable rods. Especially the wildriver salmon and steelhead rods, I horseshoe those things and can't blow them up...

In 15 years, I have literally owned over 40 G loomis rods, all except a couple were IMX and GLX's. I HAVE NEVER BROKE ONE IN A FISHING SITUATION!!!
Very simply, as was stated by someone else, almost all broken rods are because of angler abuse....
Now, if St Croix would ever build a "high end" rod over 10.5', I might just take a trip up the highway to the factory and buy one....

I emailed St.Croix about that very thing, I told them how well the loomis rods were selling and how they were missing out. They know whats going on as they discussed this in a production meeting, but they wanted to concentrate on new bass rods and the expanded avid lineup for the pacific northwest. They said they would "think about it" in the future.
Its their loss I guess, its not like steelhead float fishing hasn't exploded in their own backyard or anything.
I will always be a die hard st.croix fan and I agree with thier durability, they may be a heavier rod to a comparable loomis model but its worth it to me.

Very good to hear. The avids run heavier than other rods of the same power and length but their durability makes up for it.
Any word on blanks? .....I hope so, st.croix offers almost all of their production rods as blanks.

See, that is the issue w/ croix, when I meant "high end" I was talking Legend, Elite, Ultra, their best tech graphites....not another Avid out of them...
