dyeing fur strips

I am trying to dye rabbit,muskrat and fox strips with rit. The colors come out ok but the leather is hard and brittle. Anyboby have any tips?

Thanks Gut , I have the book. Ak goes into dying fur for uses other than fur strips.The dyeing part turns out really good, however the strips are hard as a rock.

It's realy difficult to get the die to set into the rabbit hide when dying them. I found that after you finished dying them and they are all dry take some leather softener that u would use on a pair of hiking boots and apply it to the back side of the hide. (If your doing a full hide). Also when your done drying them keep them wraped up in a damp paper towel so the hides won't dry out as fast.
